AFC Telford United could soon be boasting their first international - with striker Michael Husbands on the verge of a sensational call-up to represent St Lucia.

The Bucks forward has been approached by the Caribbean side's manager Terrence Caroo, who is planning for a two-legged World Cup qualifier with Guatemala next month.

Husbands, who scored three goals for the Bucks to help them to second place in the Blue Square North, has swapped several e-mails with Caroo in recent weeks and is excited at the opportunity.

He is eligible through his grandparents and, if selected, will jet out to the island of just 160,000 people at the start of next month for friendlies ahead of the crunch Guatemala games on June 14 and 21.

Former Tottenham and England striker Les Ferdinand is expected to be on the coaching staff, while current English marksman Jermain Defoe - who has St Lucain heritage - may also be involved.

"I've been swapping e-mails with Terrence Caroo for quite a while now," revealed Husbands, who was attending Telford's end of season presentation night at the New Bucks Head this evening."He's asked me to send some DVD footage of me playing this year. He wants to take a look to see how I could fit into their team, and it all looks quite promising.

"Les Ferdinand is apparently going to be involved and I know Jermain Defoe is going to be over there.

"I'm told there's a few English players going over, I know Leon Knight at Wycombe is one that has been mentioned.

"They're trying to put a team together, because they know the success Jamaica had with English lads in reaching the World Cup."

Husbands joined the Bucks on loan from Macclesfield, initially on loan before later signing on non-contract terms after negotiating his release from Moss Rose.
