Owain Wyn-Jones asked Laraine Adams to marry him in Camelia's Tea Room in Shrewsbury just days after he nearly died.
If it was not for the actions of Laraine on the morning of February 22, Owain may well have died or been left seriously disabled.
The pair, who live together in Shifnal, will forever be grateful for the hard-hitting Government campaign aimed at helping people spot the signs of a stroke.
They will marry on December 17 at Rowton Castle, near Shrewsbury.
After going out with friends in Woodseaves, near Newport, on February 21, Owain and Laraine, 27, sat up drinking until about 3am and the following morning lay in until 10.30am, before getting up for a cup of tea and a bacon sandwich.
Giggling
They were laughing about Owain's "odd hangover", when Laraine began to spot the signs highlighted on the Government's FAST adverts.
"He was talking, but he was starting to slur then he leaned over and put his head on my shoulder and we were giggling at him," she said. He sat up again and he was smiling and his face had dropped on one side like the advert.
"I asked him to lift both arms like the advert says and he couldn't. He got up and he fell on the floor."
Laraine called NHS Direct for advice. In minutes an ambulance was on its way and he was rushed to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire in Stoke-on-Trent.
The quick actions of Laraine, medical staff and paramedics meant Owain reached the hospital within the vital three-hour window.
Laraine said: "If it wasn't for the adverts, I don't know what would have happened. What they show is exactly what happened to him."
