Village in fight over new homes

Villagers fighting plans for 25 homes in north Shropshire have launched a petition urging developers to "work with the village and not against it".

People in Prees fear the plan could sound a death knell for the village.

They fear a massive influx of newcomers into the village, between Wem and Whitchurch would put a strain on resources, the job market and village services.

They have revived the Save Prees Action Group (SPAG), which fought similar plans in 2008.

Now SPAG members have vowed to collect signatures for their petition and present them to developers.

It comes after Bromford Housing Group applied to the district Council for planning permission last month.

Campaigner Ian Stevenson said NSDC had been inundated with dozens of letters of objection after campaigners urged villagers to speak out.

He said: "Villagers are up in arms over this housing proposal and elderly residents are angry that their needs have been ignored.

"We oppose the development of a social housing estate of 20 dwellings as none of it is guaranteed for local people.

"Villagers have launched a petition directed at Bromford Housing Group asking them to work with the village and not against it and to come up with an innovative range of housing which would be a great scheme for Prees and Prees people for years to come."

Bromford Housing Group says the development would help to secure jobs and meet area housing needs.
