Something fishy is going on at a top Shropshire visitor attraction after people were spotted depositing mystery fish from buckets into the water.

Pete Holloway, clerk of Ellesmere Town Council, told a council meeting last night that the culprits were reportedly seen introducing the animals to The Mere in Ellesmere on Thursday.

While the species of fish remains a mystery, it is feared the incident could harm either the new arrivals or those fish already in the lake.

Now civic leaders want to know exactly what lies beneath the surface of the water at the beauty spot, which has just been revamped as part of a £2 million scheme.

Mr Holloway said: "There is a danger when introducing fish into a habitat that is not their normal habitat as there is potential to introduce disease into The Mere."

Park rangers are to be contacted.
