Shropshire Bake Off star Diana cooks up another victory
Shropshire's Great British Bake Off star has made it through to a third week on the BBC show, but it wasn't all plain baking.
After impressing judges in the first week, Diana Beard, from Alkington, near Whitchurch, faced a bit more of a struggle making biscuits in last night's show - at the end of which the 69-year-old declared "Gee whizz, is it going to be like that every week?"
Her 36 cheese triangles, made with home-grown chives, were judged by Paul Hollywood to be "irregular, not quite evenly baked," and Diana herself admitted "I could have done a lot better."
In the second challenge she faired slightly better baking Mary Berry's own recipe for 18 nut and cranberry florentines, but came mid-table after they were judged "a bit chewy" and not all exactly the same size.
However, Diana impressed in the final round with a 3D steam train made of gingerbread, tuille, shortbread and pinwheels, despite Diana, who has been baking for her family for 60 years, being intimidated by her competitors' flashier flavours and designs.
"I'm traditional," she said. "I think this last fortnight has proved I'm a bit old-fashioned."
Paul Hollywood called her steam engine "very clever" despite being slightly lopsided.
The star baker was Richard the builder, and Enwezor was voted off by the judges.
