The team at Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre at Craven Arms will be celebrating the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch.

Alongside birdwatching activities, one of the main attractions on Saturday will be the chance for visitors to get up close to Barn Owls, Tawny Owls and a Little Owl brought to the centre from Chelmarsh Owl Sanctuary, near Bridgnorth, by owner Gill Hales.

It will be the second year Gill and the Discovery Centre have teamed up for the RSPB weekend, which aims to encourage animal lovers of all ages to get involved with recording the nation's feathered wildlife.

More than half a million people from across the UK are set to take part by counting the birds in their gardens on Saturday and Sunday, to help provide a vital snapshot of UK nature.

Catherine Collier, of the Discovery Centre, said: "We wanted to follow the success of last year's event to help beat the winter blues, so get out and about to celebrate the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch.

"RSPB will be on hand to give advice as well as holding workshops for making bird feeders. Visitors can learn more about our Red Kite project and visit the hide in our 30 acres of meadows."

There will be activities throughout the day for all the family including a talk given by local expert Leo Smith on Red Kites at 2pm, bird spotting from the hide throughout the day with local volunteers, and storytelling with Mike Rust on the subject of How the Nightingale Got its Song.

Booking is advisable for the Red Kite talk at 2pm but all the other activities are drop-in sessions. For more details, call (01588) 676060 or visit here.
