Pictures: Romans return to streets of Wroxeter
The Romans might have abandoned Wroxeter some 1,500 years ago but this weekend the centurions returned to their former military base.
The Ermine Street Guard descended upon the former Roman base for two days of re-enactments and family events – complete with spectacular armour and weaponry.
Mary Wycherley, site manager for Wroxeter Roman City, said there had been around 40 members of the guard who were taking part in the event, with hundreds of visitors enjoying the activities on offer. She said they had provided a spectacular sight for all who attended.
She said: "They look fantastic, they are very colourful and they are so enthusiastic about what they do and the way they interact with the visitors.
"It looks great, especially when they line up for the military display. There is one bit where they charge at towards the crowd and it definitely leaves an impression." Mrs Wycherley said the group had set up an historic encampment, and that visitors took part in a number of events, including learning gladiator skills., and that visitors could take part in a number of events, including learning gladiator skills
She said: "It is a very special event and we are very lucky to have the group here. It is just a lovely interactive experience for people, We have lots of activities for the little ones, including gladiator skills and story telling."
