Eddie the Eagle Edwards was today revealed as the main attraction at this year's Energize Awards ceremony.

The event, celebrating its 10th anniversary, will be held at Telford's International Centre for the first time.

Edwards, the ski jumper who caught the imagination of the world at the winter Olympics, will present awards to sportsmen and women, and those who support them and keep clubs alive throughout Shropshire. Edwards, whose real name is Michael, made it to the 1988 Games in Calgary and went on to become one of country's most recognised sportsmen despite finishing in a distant last place.

He was chosen as a torchbearer in the relay for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and his sporting journey has become even more popular in recent months after his life story became a hit Hollywood film starring actor Hugh Jackman.

Awards spokeswoman Tamsin Foster said: "We're delighted to have secured Eddie Edwards as our guest of honour.

"Grassroots sportsmen and woman across Shropshire will relate to his never-say-die attitude."

Nominations for the Energize Awards, which will take place on November 3, open on June 6.

Energize became an independent organisation in 2012 and has a small team based in Shrewsbury.
