Free parking for late night shoppers is one of a number of initiatives being launched to attract people to Telford.

Telford Shopping Centre is already getting into the festive spirit and will also be launching a major advertising campaign next week. The campaign aims to get more people to spend money on the high streets, rather than online, in the run up to the festive season. The shopping centre has previously advertised on television, radio, billboards and online – and this year's campaign is likely to be no different.

Huge posters have been seen on motorways into the West Midlands to attract Christmas shoppers from far and wide.

Shopping centre spokeswoman Natalie Brown said: "Telford Shopping Centre will continue offer free parking on Thursday evenings for late night shopping in the run-up to Christmas. The centre has a comprehensive advertising campaign to promote Christmas rolling out across Shropshire and the West Midlands, as well as online, from next week."

Santa arrives at the centre with his grotto on Thursday from 4pm. The grotto will be open every day up until Christmas Eve, though opening times will vary.

The centre's Christmas Lights switch-on will take place on November 19, with entertainment throughout the centre all day, with pyrotechnic displays outside the centre leading up to the 4pm switch-on. Shropshire Council will also be opening up some of Shrewsbury's car parks for free, while the indoor market will be open for business well past its traditional closing time. Visitors can park for free starting on the night of the town's switch-on event, and every Wednesday evening until Christmas, shoppers can park for free in Frankwell Main, St Julian's Friars and Abbey Foregate car parks, from 4pm.
