Walcot Hall, at Lydbury North, near Bishop's Castle, will open its door to passion, drama and darkly glorious music of Verdi's Rigoletto, for an Opera in the Ballroom event on June 9 and 10.

Directed by Nicholas Heath it will be performed by Opera A La Carte in a pre-Raphaelite inspired production, set in 1850.

The opera shows how Rigoletto's curse changes his life forever as his degenerate working world collides with the pious world of his much-loved daughter Gilda.

Walcot Hall's beautifully decorated ballroom, with its 30ft ornate ceilings, crystal chandeliers, open fireplace, gilt mirrors and tall sash windows, is a unique setting for the performance that will showcase music conducted by Benjamin Woodward from the piano.

Lucinda Parish, co-owner of Walcot Hall, said: "It is a magical weekend suited to seasoned opera-goers and initiates alike.

Gates open at 5.30pm so that everyone can enjoy the grounds and gardens, as well as set up picnics. The start is at 7.30pm."

The event is just days before two nights of outdoor concerts at Walcot Hall, with Michael Ball and Alfie Boe singing together on June 20 and Cliff Richard there on June 21.
