But the lure of staying with his hometown club has been enough to persuade the former Stoke marksman to fight for his place - much to the manager's delight.

"Andy's staying on, and that's great news for us," said Peters.

"I made it clear to him he would not always be starting for us because we've got people like David Hibbert, Michael Symes, Marc Pugh and Derek Asamoah as forwards who could play at any time.

"But he's going to be really good to have around, and I said to Andy yesterday that he could still be our top goalscorer because he knows where the goal is.

"He had a few niggly injuries last year, but I really think he will be our top scorer if he stays fit. I'm delighted he's staying."

Meanwhile, Peters also held talks with out-of-contract pair Ben Herd and Steve Leslie, who have both been offered new contracts.

"I had great meetings with Ben and Steve and they both said they want to stay," he revealed.

"I think they will come in today or on Monday and get it done because their contracts will start from July 1. If they don't get it done they will be on last year's wages."

Town fans can get a close look at the club's New Meadow stadium between 10am and 4pm tomorrow in order to buy season tickets or stock up at the club shop.

The new home shirt, provided by Italian company A-Line, will be on sale for the first time and supporters will also be able to snap up tickets for the first pre-season friendly next Saturday against the A-Line All Stars team.

Tickets for the historic first match at the new ground are priced at £12 for adults and £8 for concessions. The capacity is restricted to 6,000 as the game is a ramp-up event to help the club gain a full safety certificate.
