Ludlow motor club drivers Get it Sideways
A few Ludlow Castle Motor Club members travelled to Down Ampney Gloucestershire for the Get it Sideways Stages organised by Cheltenham Motor Club.
The event covered 49miles over 10 special stages run on the concrete surface of the old airfield.
15 year old co-driver Jack Bowen from Hereford teamed up for the first time with driver Lee Griffths from Ware, they were out in Lee's Peugeot 106 and seeded at 32. Bowen was keen to progress further than stage one having retired on that stage in last year's event and duly did so reporting a clean run on the first three stages.
However stage four was eventful, a stranded car at a chicane slowed them a little and a when a car spun in front of them Griffiths had to take avoiding action to prevent an accident. After four stages the crew heldeighth overall and joint second in class.
On stage five they miss-judged their braking and nudged a bale at a chicane losing a few seconds. With a clean run over the remaining stages they were pleased to finish fifth overall and first in class.
Club vice chairman James Hamer from Leysters, normally seen in the driver's seat of his Subaru, was out co- driving for Ed Robinson from Cheltenham in Ed's Gwynnespeed run Citroen C2, the pair were seeded at 27.
Hamer admitted several encounters with cones with his driver still being in gravel mode rather than sealed
surface. During the afternoon they tidied up their act and reported no mishaps on the way to 11th overall and second in class one minute 23 seconds behind Griffiths/Bowen.
Roger Titley from Dorrington also made the trip in his 2.8 litre BMW 323 with Owen Morgan from Shrewsbury calling the bends. Lying in 13th place after three stages Titley spun and dropped to 20th, unfortunately a climb back up the leaderboard wasn't to be as the pot holes and rough surface took their toll damaging the BMW's suspension forcing the pair into retirement.
