A Shrewsbury post office saved from the axe following a campaign is now set to close, it was revealed today.

Post Office Ltd has written to people living near the Greenfields Post Office in Wood Street warning them it could close at "short notice" at any time.

The letter says it is proposing to trial a Post Office service at the Robson shop.

It says: "We are doing this because a temporary agent is currently running the branch. This means that the service could close at short notice at any time."

A Post Office Ltd spokeswoman today said: "Greenfields Post Office is operated by a temporary subpostmaster and Post Office Ltd is proposing to trial a new service in this part of Shrewsbury, replacing the existing Greenfields branch and helping to put the service on a more stable footing. We are currently seeking feedback from customers."

In July 2008 campaigners won a reprieve for the br- anch following a nationwide closure programme to slash costs.

Greenfields was on the hit-list of closures in Shropshire announced in April 2008. But Post Office Ltd confirmed it would stay open following a review of issues raised during consultation.

* The branch's former sub-postmistress Rubbina Shaheen is accused of stealing £43,269.10 from her employers. She is to appear at Shrewsbury Crown Court in November.
