Hope House Hospice has cancelled its Santa Run in Ludlow on Sunday amid fears that runners could be injured in the snow and ice.

Organisers of the run, in aid of the county children's hospice, said today that the mile-long route included steep hills and ungritted roads and they could not take the chance of someone being hurt.

They are now urging people to instead join in Oswestry's Santa Run on December 12.

Vanessa Thomas, from Hope House, said the number of people who had entered Ludlow's first Santa Run had been disappointingly low, but said it had been the weather that had led to the cancellation.

"As well as the adults that had registered, we were aware that many were going to take along children to run," she said.

"We have looked at the health and safety issues and have decided to call the run off. Many of those who had entered were coming from a long way away and we doubt if all of them would have make it to Ludlow."
