A major expansion at dairy giant Muller's Market Drayton factory has been given the go-ahead – potentially creating up to 300 new jobs. The firm is one of Europe's biggest dairy producers.

It has won full planning permission from Shropshire Council to expand its flagship British site near the A53 on the outskirts of the town.

The proposed development is expected to provide a new manufacturing, storage and distribution facility on an 8.5-hectare site opposite the current dairy site.

The news comes as a late Christmas present for the local economy after the company revealed 55 job cuts last month, including some at Market Drayton.

Muller bosses have said the expansion of the UK?facility is anticipated to 'create 300 additional local jobs'.

Civic leaders today described the news as a 'great boost' for the town.

Seb Jones, director of Muller Dairy UK, said: "While it should be stressed that the exact start date has still to be agreed, we are delighted to have been granted full planning permission for a new development by Muller Dairy in Market Drayton."

David Minnery, Shropshire Council member for Market Drayton West, said: "Obviously the jobs won't be created overnight, but it should mean anyone in Market Drayton looking for one should get a job quite easily."
