10,000 get free internet under new council plans

More than 10,000 residents on a housing estate in Telford could get free internet in their homes as part of a £6million scheme to breathe new life into the area.
Plans to give everyone living in Brookside free wi-fi internet access could see them do away with their current broadband provider.
The proposal is part of a multi-million pound scheme by Telford & Wrekin Council which it claims could help people find jobs and use it for education.
Councillor Shaun Davies, for Telford & Wrekin Council, said: "Free wi-fi across the estate is part of our £6million investment.
"It presents job opportunities, children can do their homework and people can work from home. It's win win. People who have currently got a broadband account can use the free wi-fi.
"This is a fundamental part of the plan for Brookside. It's key to the regeneration."
Councillor Davies added the area had been ignored for too long.
A report due to go before the authority's cabinet on Thursday says: "Brookside local centre has been constructed in the form of a dark-covered square of inward facing shops and community facilities.
"A scheme for the redevelopment of the local centre will be drawn up working with residents and stakeholders that will secure its long term sustainability."
The next step is to agree with residents how best to consult and involve them.
