More than 5,000 tickets have already been sold for pop superstar Jessie J's outdoor concert in Shrewsbury this summer, it was revealed this afternoon.

The singer, who was celebrating her 24th birthday today, will be playing in the Quarry on July 6 in front of an expected crowd of 10,000 people – making it the biggest gig ever staged at the town park.

Tickets priced at £32.50 for adults and £20 for children went on sale yesterday, with about £140,000 worth selling by midday today.

Keith Louch, from promoter KAL Music, said between his company, Theatre Severn and online ticket agencies about 5,000 tickets had sold.

He said his company had sold about 1,600 tickets, while Theatre Severn bosses have already shifted 3,600.

Mr Louch said: "5,000 tickets in 24 hours is not bad going. This is the fastest-selling concert at the Quarry.

"It is going to sell out, but how quickly I don't know."

Mr Louch said about a third of the tickets sold were for under-16s, with the majority of buyers based in Shrewsbury and Telford.

Peter Nicholson, manager at Theatre Severn, said there had been strong online sales.

"We have sold about 3,600. It is looking good for a sell-out," he said,

Mr Nicholson said he thought ticket sales would be boosted by the star's role as one of the mentors on BBC1's new show The Voice, which attracted 9.8 million viewers on Saturday.
