Motorists in Shropshire and Mid Wales faced huge rush-hour delays when lorries carrying giant wind turbine blades travelled through the region.

Anti-windfarm campaigners held peaceful protests at the roadside in Newtown as the lorries travelled down the A483 from Oswestry, through Welshpool and Newtown and on to Ceredigion yesterday.

The replacement blades were en route from Ellesmere Port to Cefn Croes windfarm. Campaigner Michelle Lloyd said the transport caused traffic chaos from about 7.30am, with queues of up to a mile building behind the lorries.

Dyfed-Powys Police confirmed it had sent an escort to help the lorries but there had been no incidents.
