Heroic Telford soldier Ricky Furgusson today said he was honoured to have been made a freeman of the borough of Telford & Wrekin.

The 26-year-old from Stirchley, who has been awarded the Military Cross, was given the honour last night for his 'incredible bravery'. Councillor Arnold England last night proposed the honour at a special ceremony at The Place in Oakengates which was unanimously backed.

In his proposal he said: "We are here to honour Ricky's fearless services to the borough."

Councillor Kuldip Sahota, leader of the council, said: "Ricky's incredible bravery both during and after his service are an inspiration to everyone.

"We have given him this honour to ensure that his contribution is not forgotten."

Councillor Steven Bentley added: "What Ricky gave for the country and the borough is amazing, no material prize or honour can make up for that.

"I just wanted to say that everyone's thanks are sincerely heartfelt and we mean it."

Corporal Furgusson, of the 4th Battalion, The Rifles, saved the lives of others on four occasions in 2009 and 2010 while serving in Afghanistan.

He said: "It is a great honour. Thank you for all your kind and wonderful words. I did what any other soldier would have done."

His induction as an honorary freeman is the start of a whirlwind fortnight.

He will also be carrying the Olympic torch through Broseley on May 30 before taking part in spectacular jubilee celebrations on the Thames on June 3.

The next day he will be celebrating with the Queen at her garden party and jubilee concert at Buckingham Palace.

He said: "Carrying the Olympic torch is a real privilege. To have been selected from thousands of nominees is very special. I am really looking forward to it and friends and family will be there to support me. I just hope I don't drop it."
