A Shropshire man arrested on suspicion of having a gun was in fact carrying a sex toy, a court heard.

Ian Stuart Poulton appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday and admitted possessing an item which had the appearance of a handgun with intent to cause fear of violence.

Mr Michael Sherwood-Smith, defending, told the court the item in question was a 'sex aid'.

Poulton, 33, of Mill Bank, Wellington, further admitted assaulting Jose Luis Candelaria, causing him actual bodily harm, on the same day in May this year.

He had also previously pleaded guilty to a charge of causing damage.

Poulton had denied robbing Mr Candelaria and Judge Peter Barrie recorded a formal not guilty verdict after the prosecution offered no evidence on the charge.

Poulton was remanded in custody and the case adjourned for sentence to September 24.
