Anger as Shrewsbury mail jobs face axe

Fears were today raised that mail delivery times across Shropshire could suffer amid plans to shut the county's only sorting office.

Royal Mail yesterday announced formal proposals to close its office in Castle Foregate, Shrewsbury. Under the plans, mail would instead be sorted in Chester, Wolverhampton and Cardiff.

The firm says it hopes to avoid compulsory redundancies at the site which employs 240 people and has been processing mail since 1880.

Angry business and council leaders said the news was a sad day for the town, and claimed there would be a knock-on affect for residents, businesses and local government in Shropshire and Mid Wales, with delivery times suffering as a result.

Councillor Keith Barrow, leader of Shropshire Council, added: "It is terrible news to potentially be losing that many jobs.

"It is important a lot of the things – particularly things like voting cards come election time – get there on time so I really do hope any changes won't affect the service too much."
