The 23 pupils and three members of staff from The Priory School in Shrewsbury returned to the county on Saturday morning after flying into Heathrow Airport.

It was a relief for family and friends who were originally told it would be Thursday before they could return home.

The group was stranded in New York after scheduled flight was cancelled last week as the storm battered the east coast of America, killing more than 100 people.

On Saturday pupils, who were greeted by their families, described the trip as an experience never to be forgotten.

Headteacher Candy Garbett praised the staff who went on the trip and the behaviour of the children.

She said: "The staff has done a great job over there to keep the kids calm. Credit must go to BA for pulling it out of the bag to get us home."

Some members of the party will now have to miss a GCSE maths resit exam that was due to take place this week, and will now have to be rescheduled.
