Weather warning over ice as gritters out across Shropshire
Forecasters predicted the coldest Bonfire Night in over a decade, with gritters being sent out across Shropshire tonight for the second time in 24 hours.
Motorists were warned to take care on the roads as temperatures reached close to zero. Large parts of England and Wales are on flood alert after torrential rain, snow and blizzards swept into the UK over the weekend.
Heavy deluges of rain caused flash flooding in some places, with Dorset, Devon, Somerset and Wiltshire the worst affected.
Officials at the Met Office issued a severe weather alert across the South, South-East and south Midlands for up to 40mm of rain.
Telford & Wrekin Council sent gritters out at 4am today and said they would be out again tonight, with temperatures expected to fall to 2C (36F).
Shropshire Council also sent gritters out last night and will do so again tonight.
Forecasters said today would be the coldest November 5 since daily temperature records began in 1999.
Every November 5 since 1999 had reached at least 13C (55F). Last year saw 15C (59F). But today temperatures will reach just 8C (46F) dropping to 2C (36F) tonight. The temperature will feel nearer freezing due to bitter northerly breezes.
Snow fell in Somerset, North Dorset, Wiltshire and South Gloucestershire, with reports of at least 3cm of snow.
