Thousands of shoppers descended on a Christmas market in Shrewsbury which organisers declared a resounding success.

People flooded to the Chronicle Christmas Market on Saturday, a partnership set up between Shrewsbury Farmers' Market and the Shropshire Star's sister paper the Shrewsbury Chronicle three years ago.

The festive extravaganza took place in The Square, from 9am until 6pm, and from 1pm a chorus of 14 Victorian style carol singers helped get shoppers into the Christmas spirit.

Festive treats and gifts were showcased by the 54 local stallholders throughout the day as they sold a variety of high quality food, drink and crafts.

Organiser Stuart Jones said it had created a notable boost for the local economy and said the show would return again next year after 'many thousands' descended on the market.

Mr Jones said: "It was a fantastic success and a perfect tonic for the traders and producers who have had a hard year in many respects as some of the farmers markets we've had have been hit by wet weather."
