Tributes paid to hockey player Thomas Chevins killed in crash

Tributes were today paid to a 23-year-old man from Shropshire who died in a car crash.

Thomas Chevins, of Buntingsdale Road, Market Drayton, played for Market Drayton Hockey Club and today team mates described him as a loyal, enthusiastic and committed player with a brilliant sense of fun.

Mr Chevins died when his red BMW left the A53 Newcastle Road near to Audley Cross Farm, near Market Drayton and struck a tree in the early hours of Friday.

Chairman of Market Drayton Hockey Club, Paul Butterfield, said: "The sudden, tragic loss of Tom from our lives will leave a huge void in our hockey family. Tom always played with enthusiasm, a smile and a commitment to do things the correct way.

"He was inspirational in helping his brothers Jordan, Alfie and Harry in their hockey playing careers always encouraged with his sense of humour.

"It cannot be underestimated how important he was to the Hockey club and how his loyalty, organisational skills and his sense of humour has helped rejuvenate the club and help it continue on its successful ways. He will leave a huge gap in all our lives."

Mr Chevins arranged hockey tours with local company Festour, based in Shropshire Street, Market Drayton.

A spokesman from the company said: "He has left us for the ultimate festival in the sky."

Mr Chevins leaves father Mike, mother Heather and three younger brothers, Jordan 20, Alfie 15 and Harry 13.

His family described him as an 'intelligent and handsome young man.'
