The proposed 5,000 square metre poultry unit would be built on land at Bank House Farm in Yockleton.

PF & MJ Williams & Son wants to create two poultry sheds, housing up to 45,000 birds each, to make its business financially viable following the loss of the sugar beet factory at Allscott.

A design and access statement submitted to Shropshire Council in support of the scheme, said the units were necessary to bolster the UK's poultry industry and meet the growing need for chicken meat.

The farming business currently has one full-time employee and one part-time seasonal member of staff.

The proposed unit would create an additional full-time job and up to 10 casual roles during the period when the birds are introduced to the sheds.

The chicks would arrive at the site at one to two days old from a range of UK hatcheries and would be reared in the units for up to 42 days before being collected and exported to processing plants.

Vehicles would clock up an average 658 visits to the site per year.

A report to the council said: "The sheds will be fully insulated to prevent noise from the birds and machinery being heard externally."

The plans are under consideration by Shropshire Council.
