150 jobs at risk at Telford firm GKN Sankey
More than 150 jobs are under threat at one of Shropshire's biggest employers, it was announced today as GKN Sankey confirmed a risk of redundancies at Telford.
Car chassis and frame manufacturer GKN Sankey Ltd, which is based in Hadley Castle Works, has confirmed 153 temporary and permanent staff are at risk of being made redundant.
All the job losses would come from the auto structure side of the business and would not affect employees of GKN Wheels.
Bosses at the firm, which builds chassis and frames for companies including Ford, Toyota and Land Rover, said it was facing a 'restructuring initiative' following the loss of a number of long term contracts.
Chris Fox, for GKN, said: "We have entered into a consultation process with employees which could reduce the workforce by 153 people.
"We have known for some time that a current programme of longstanding, high-volume work will reduce and eventually cease.
"Economic times are tough. We need to re-shape and re-structure the business so it can compete for future work."
Stefan Blasczyk, Unite regional officer, said: "Together we will try to avert as many redundancies as possible."
A GKN Sankey employee, who did not want to be named, said: "As you can imagine a lot of people are very worried. It's not how you want to start a new year."
