Red faces after Shrewsbury 'Whelsh Bridge' road sign blunder

Blundering workmen have caused a stir by misspelling the name of a famous bridge in the county.

Sign makers were left red faced after wrongly spelling the word 'Welsh' on a road sign in Shrewsbury.

A yellow sign was put on the roadside to advise drivers that the town's grade II listed Welsh Bridge was closed yesterday for roadworks.

But drivers were left taking double takes after spotting the baffling sign, which instead read 'Whelsh Bridge Closed'.

The mistake sparked a flurry of comments on social media website Twitter.

Holly Rebecca Steed said yesterday: "Welsh Bridge is closed, except they've spelt it 'Whelsh'."

And Kevin Quigley was also out with his camera to capture the error. The historic bridge, which crosses the River Severn and connects the Frankwell area with the town centre, was closed yesterday between 6am and 6pm for general repairs to the carriageway.

Victoria Quay in the town was also closed off.

A diversion route was in place along Frankwell, Copthorne Road, Shelton Road, Roman Road, Hazledine Way, Pritchard Way, Old Potts Way, English Bridge Gyratory, English Bridge and the town centre.

The same closure will also be in place next Sunday.

The road could be shut up to 11pm next weekend if work overruns.

Welsh Bridge was closed on several occasions last year, prompting complaints from residents.

And this is not the first botched sign to appear on roads in Shropshire.

Last month motorists in Telford raised a smile when a road sign around the new Southwater development read 'Bridgenorth' instead of Bridgnorth.

Other blunders around the county in recent years include an arrow pointing to Wellington Cemetery reading Wellington 'Cenetery' and three Ls on a road sign for Malinslee on the slip-road of the Eastern Primary by Telford Railway Station.

There was also a sign near the Jiggers Bank roundabout in Telford which spelt Horsehay 'Horeshay'.
