A boat crew from Shrewsbury Fire Station, along with pumps and a rescue tender from Wellington, arrived on the scene at 6.15pm yesterday evening.

Fire service personnel towed the marooned men, who were in their early 20s, to safety along with their dinghy.

Steve Morris, watch manager at Shrewsbury, said: "They were in an inflatable dinghy and got into the river.

"They soon became concerned about the current, which began dragging them out quickly.

"They managed to get themselves under the bridge because they did not want the current to take them any further."

The fire crew managed to get down the steep banks and pull the men and the boat to safety.

Firefighter Morris said: "It isn't too rare an event. As soon as the good weather comes out people want to get in the water."
