Officials from the Preston Montford Field Centre in Montford Bridge took to the fields to promote a wildlife adventure day – as Met Office weathermen predicted temperatures in the region to hit 20C (68F) today. It is set to stay warm and sunny for the rest of the week with temperatures rising to 21C (70F).

The wildlife adventure day will take place on July 27, between 10am and 3.30pm.

Admission is free, with refreshments available to buy throughout the day. The event is to celebrate a pair of special anniversaries this year – the 70th anniversary of The Field Studies Council and the centenary of the British Ecological Society.

A spokeswoman for the centre said there will be plenty of interesting activities for visitors to try out on the day.

"There will be lots of activities to get involved in – explore our ponds, woodland and meadows and find out more about the plants and animals that live there; make a bird box and an insect house; go pond dipping, see mice and voles and spectacular butterflies and moths; go orienteering and follow our tree trail, and much more," she said.

A wildlife review was recently carried out at the Shropshire-based field studies centre.

Rare discoveries included an unusual slime mould, Merlin falcon and a possible pine marten sighting, a species previously thought to be extinct in this part of the country.
