The fire in a stone barn at Peaton near Craven Arms broke out just before 1am, with flames leaping into the sky.
It took more than eight hours for the blaze to be brought under control.
A fire investigation officers visited the scene this morning to look at how the incident may have started.
Crews from Craven Arms, Ludlow and Clun, along with a water carrying vehicle from Bridgnorth, were sent to the barn after the alarm was raised.
A spokesman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was clear that the round bale hay and straw could not be saved and the decision was made to allow the blaze to burn itself out.
