Pam's courgette looks a little quackers
As vegetables go, it's a bit quackers. Shropshire Star receptionist Pam Lane was stunned after being given this courgette – which she says looks uncannily like a duck.
It was given to Pam, from Little Stretton, by close friend and gardener Mick Mellings, who keeps her topped up with a regular supply of fruit and veg.
"We normally have a bundle off him and he found this one out for me," Pam said.
"I thought it looked just like a duck and it was such a surprise really."
It is not the first time Mr Mellings has unearthed a vegetable with more than a passing resemblance to a member of the animal kingdom.
Back in 2009, one of his giant courgettes also made the papers because of its likeness to a penguin.
And Pam is not the first person in the south of the county in more recent times to unearth a strange-looking vegetable.
In the summer, 73-year-old Dorothea Clinton, of Peaton, near Ludlow, pulled up a potato which bore an uncanny resemblance to a duck and contacted the Shropshire Star to show off her unusual find.
Mrs Clinton's son, Alan, grows potatoes, runner beans, broad beans, peas, beetroot, leek and cabbage in their back garden.
But she said she had never seen anything quite like it before.
"I just pulled it out the ground and I thought 'Oooh, it's a duck'," she said.
And last year teenager Henry Stanhope, 14, of Ryton, near Dorrington, was forced to do a double take after pulling up a potato that bore a striking resemblance to the bear in hit Hollywood blockbuster Ted.
