Honours awarded to Shrewsbury's unsung heroes
[gallery] The "unsung heroes" of Shrewsbury were thanked in a special ceremony to celebrate those who have worked tirelessly for the town.
Last night's annual Mayoral awards recognised those who have made an outstanding contribution to the town, from businesses to individuals. They were personally thanked by Mayor Jon Tandy.
And the event was also a chance for him to bid a fond farewell as he prepares to stand down at the end of this week.
The ceremony was an emotional night for many, as several posthumous awards were announced.Helen Ball, town clerk for Shrewsbury Town Council, hosted the event and said it was important to take the opportunity to say thank you.
Several firms were awarded gold in the business category, including White 7 and the late Mr Galliers. Speaking of Mr Galliers, who was a tycoon and the inspiration behind the popular River Festival, Mrs Ball said: "He could not contain the passion he had for the town of his birth and he gave so much to Shrewsbury."
Overall winner was Salop Design and Engineering. Mrs Ball said: "This is a family-run firm going back to 1960. It has gone from strength to strength and never stopped striving. Nor has it lost that essence of Shrewsbury and is incredibly dedicated to the town."
Managing director Richard Homden said: "It's so exciting to have been given this award.
Thecommunity award was scooped by Digital Den. The firm helps the unemployed get back into work through tailoring their CVS and improving their computer skills.
John Clark, of Digital Den, said: "We are ecstatic, it's great to be recognised in this way."
Funeral director Aubrey Kirkham was awarded the courtesy title.Best Market Stall went to the Market Hall Buffet, run by Noreen Maddox. She said: "I'm really happy and very thankful to all my wonderful staff ."
The environment award was scooped by Severn Hospice volunteer gardeners, which is responsible for the gardens at both sites.
Shrewsbury Folk Festival was awarded in the tourism category, and Young Enterprise was recognised for its work with youth.
Special mention was also made of Chinese businessman Raymond Liu.
