Pomp and ceremony as new Ludlow Mayor is sworn in

The new mayor of Ludlow has been sworn in for the coming year.

At a formal ceremony held at Ludlow Assembly Rooms, Paul Draper took over the role from outgoing mayor Jim Smithers.

Also sworn in at the ceremony on Wednesday was new deputy mayor Paul Kemp.

Speaking of his civic role Mr Draper said: "I'm extremely proud to be mayor, it's a great honour.

"It was also a great honour to present Mayor Smithers with his past mayor's badge.

"It was very well supported.

"A number of visiting mayors attended from the surrounding area including Shrewsbury, Kidderminster, Leominster and Much Wenlock among others, as well as the mayor and consort from our twin town of Narberth in south Wales."

Civic awards were handed out to Marjorie Waite, who will be 100 this year, for dedication to the community; members of Ludlow Boxing Club for raising £5,000 doing the three peaks challenge and cycling from Land's End to John O'Groats; Julie Frost and Vivienne Schwarz for their work with Ludlow Brownies, and Margaret Edwards, of Poyner's Drapers, for her charity work.
