Travellers back at illegal camp near M54

Travellers have returned to a patch of land close to Shropshire's motorway service station.

The illegal camp appeared on Monday this week close to the M54 junction four and steps are now being taken to remove the assembled caravans and animals as quickly as possible.

There has previously been some confusion over the ownership of the land near Shifnal, with neither Shropshire Council nor the Highways Agency taking responsibility for the ownership of it.

The travellers' appearance comes just weeks after they were last moved from the site. They were last seen near the Welcome Break Service Station in May, after moving from land off Newport Road.

Shropshire Councillor Kevin Turley, for Shifnal North, said more needs to be done to give travellers a more suitable alternative. He said: "The people of Shifnal are just getting more and more irritated going forwards.

"I have been trying to liaise with the general manager of the motorway services because I can't imagine it is good for their business.

"Travellers getting off the motorway are setting up there because it is the first available patch of land and until they have got a better encampment, they are going to continue to pitch up."
