An elderly man who was struck by a car on the A49 has died.

The 83-year-old man died on the way to hospital after the accident at Little Stretton on the junction with Crown Lane.

He was walking north on the opposite side of the road from the junction and was involved in a collision with a blue Nissan Micra travelling south.

The driver of the Micra, a 70-year-old man from Ludlow, is not believed to have sustained any injuries.

It is the second fatal accident on the same stretch of the A49 within two weeks. Ilse Forster, 91, died after being knocked down by a lorry at Crossways, Church Stretton, on November 17.

At the end of October the same stretch of road saw a serious crash between a bus and an articulated lorry, with four taken to hospital, at the next junction with the B5477 also to Little Stretton.

Councillor Michael Braid, mayor of Church Stretton, said: "One death is very bad, two is absolutely appalling. It is a real shock. It is difficult to make a connection between the two, but they're all on the A49.

"First and foremost our thoughts are with the man's family, as they were with the lady a couple of weeks ago.

"This is only emphasising that the A49 is a very, very dangerous road."

Lee Chapman, Shropshire councillor for Church Stretton and Craven Arms, had expressed concerns about the safety of the road.

He said today: "We haven't seen anything like this in many years, but clearly there are some serious concerns on the A49. It's appalling.

"Obviously our thoughts are with the family," he added.

Anyone who witnessed the collision at 4.40pm on Sunday or the events leading up to it can contact West Mercia Police on 101.

In a separate accident, a woman had to be cut free from the car she was driving yesterday after a two-car collision between Dorrington and Bayston Hill at about 3.30pm.
