Police had informed the Highways Agency that High Street, in Church Stretton, needed gritting after receiving calls from struggling motorists.

The gritting lorry on tow

A gritter was set to the area on Saturday morning at about 9am but soon found itself in difficulty.

It eventually had to be towed away from the junction of Lutwyche Road and Shrewsbury Road after hitting a wall.

Resident Richard Trueman, who saw the vehicle being removed, said: "

I saw there was a grit spillage on the road that was being cleared up by the council and the grit lorry had significant damage to the front right quarter.

"A heavy recovery truck was setting up and subsequently towed the broken gritter away at about 10am.

"It's a bad time for the council to have a gritter away for repair."
