The motorway will be closed between Junction 5 at Telford and Junction 3 at Albrighton, between 9pm and 6am, until May 13 for resurfacing work.

At Junction 4 near Shifnal the eastbound entry slip-road will also be closed between 10pm and 6am from today for one week, while the westbound carriageway was closed last night.

Meanwhile the A49 in the south of the county will continue to have overnight closures between Bromfield, north of Ludlow, and Onibury, south of Craven Arms.

The road will be shut from tonight until Saturday, February 7, from 8pm to 6am. The work follows a full closure over the weekend of the A49 at Onibury Bridge, which reopened at 6am this morning.

Chris Kirk, speaking for the Highways Agency, said in all cases diversions would be clearly signposted.

He said: "We plan maintenance and improvement projects carefully to allow road works to be completed safely, in a cost effective way while keeping disruption to road users to a minimum.

"We do as much work as possible overnight and when roads are less busy in order to keep more lanes open for road users at peak travel times.

"Drivers are advised to check their route for road works and allow extra time for their journeys where needed.

"We have a variety of journey planning tools that road users can use to check travel conditions on the roads we manage, and we will do all we can to keep road users informed."
