Tonnes of hay and a tractor go up in flames after Shropshire barn fire
Hundreds of tonnes of hay went up in flames in an early-hours fire at a Shropshire farm.
Fire crews from eight stations were called to tackle the blaze at the farm near Whixall, between Wem and Whitchurch, on Sunday morning.
The fire was discovered at the farm at Dobson's Bridge at about 4.15am and took more than six hours to extinguish, with crews damping down and raking out remains into the evening.
No-one was hurt in the blaze, but the 200m x 50m barn was destroyed, and aboutalong with 500 tonnes of hay went up in smoke, along with and a tractor that was in the barn. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
A fire service spokesman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Fire appliances including the heavy pumping unit and the water carrier were mobilised from Baschurch, Ellesmere, Oswestry, Prees, Shrewsbury, Tweedale, Wem and Whitchurch.
"Two main jets and two hose reel jets were used to extinguish fire."
He said the crews were scaled back at about 11am, but some firefighters remained on site to damp down.
