Shrewsbury Town Council has unveiled its plans to conduct an extensive refurbishment of the Quarry's paddling pool and play areas.

The proposal includes the town council taking ownership of the paddling pool and introducing a number of water features, including shower fountains and sprays. The council also intends to introduce a variety of new equipment, along with the extension of the safe surface into the toddlers area.

Andrew Bannerman, Shropshire Councillor for the Quarry area, said the creation of water features would be a positive development for the park.

He said: "I think it is lovely and it has been very popular in other places. To be frank, the paddling pool has been very badly run for a few years now. If the town council could take over that space it would make a very nice adjunct to the play area. We want to develop that part of the Quarry.

"I think the Quarry is the centrepiece of recreation and relaxation in the town, it is a wonderful thing to have in town and we need to make it as agreeable and attractive a place as we can."

He also welcomed plans to improve play equipment at the park. He said: "I have made no secret of the fact that the current equipment really is only suitable for children up to six or seven years old.

"Every parent I speak to says there is really nothing for older children there."

Alan Mosley, Shrewsbury Town Council leader, said: "We know that these important facilities are very well used by residents from across the town as well as by visitors. We want to bring them up to date and be of even more interest and value to our young people."
