Solicitor Steven Meredith said the theft, from a Tesco store in Telford, was "the lowest value" case he had ever seen.

Magistrates in Telford were told that Richard Graham Culley, 35, stole the bag because he feared his blood sugars were getting low and had no money on him.

Prosecuting, Mrs Kate Price said Culley had walked straight out without attempting to pay.

Culley, of Southfield, Sutton Hill, Telford, admitted one charge of theft and another of handling stolen goods.

The latter charge came about because Tesco security staff found him in possession of three packets of coffee worth £22.74.

He was given a 12-month conditional discharge and told to pay £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

For Culley, Mr Meredith, for said the case was "the lowest value of theft I have ever come across".

He said that Culley, of Southfield, Sutton Hill, Telford, had been walking to collect a methadone prescription and had felt the need to top up his blood sugars.

The court was told that Culley's last conviction was 13 years ago.
