Kelly Evans, of Madeley, Telford, told how her daughter stopped breathing and turned blue before the mystery man came to her rescue and resuscitated the child.

Miss Evans is now appealing for the man to get in touch so she can thank him for his quick-thinking action.

Miss Evans was in the kitchen of her home in Tweedale Crescent yesterday when she heard her daughter Shyla making a noise.

She said: "She was on the settee watching television when I heard a gurgling noise.

"I ran in here and she was really struggling for breath, it seemed like she was choking.

"I did the normal things, I smacked her back, but it didn't make any difference and I was in a real state. She wasn't breathing and her lips went blue."

Miss Evans, 37, said her telephone wasn't working, so she ran out into the street to raise the alarm.

"This man, who I had never seen before, heard me screaming and came to see what was wrong," she said.

"He slapped Shyla on the back, and then he pressed down just below the rib cage, and in a few seconds she was breathing again, she started crying her eyes out.

"He just handed her back to me, and said 'here's your little girl back' and he just walked off. I was in such a state that I never thought about asking him who he was or how I could get in touch."

She said the man, who was aged around 40, tall and balding, told her he would not normally have been in the area.

"I'm just so glad he was there, he saved Shyla's life, there is no doubt about that.

"I would love to find him so I could say thank you.

"There is no doubt in my mind that he saved her life.

"And for that I owe him more than I can ever give.

"He really is a hero.

"I'm so lucky the phone wasn't working, because otherwise I would have been waiting for an ambulance and she might not be here now."

Miss Evans said it appeared Shyla had been sick, and had choked on her vomit.
