Rare Morris Minor pedal car expected to sell for £1,200 at Shrewsbury auction

A rare Morris Minor 1000 car is expected to sell for about £1,200 at an auction in Shrewsbury. But this car has no engine – instead it comes with pedals designed for little feet.

The toy car, which was made by the Morris Minor Centre of Bath, is one of only 56 ever made in 1993. It will go under the hammer at Halls' toys and interiors auction at the Battlefield salerooms tomorrow.

Modelled after the J-40 pressed steel pedal car made by Nuffield Group in the 1950s, this updated version uses lighter materials and is closely modelled on the Minor 1000.

It features treadle action pedals and opening boot and bonnet, which reveals a dummy engine and six volt battery to operate lights and horn.

Stewart Orr, Halls' toy specialist, said: "The Morris Minor pedals cars never really took off and they sold only 56.

"The one we have for sale is in unused condition."

Elsewhere in the saleroom, a Corgi model of the Batmobile, complete with its original firing rockets and box, is expected to sell for about £250.

It is one of 15 Corgi lots consigned by a Shropshire collector, which could make the owner more than £1,200.

The collection also includes other collectable models such as a Man from Uncle car valued at up to £150, a Green Hornet Black Beauty car valued at up to £180 and a James Bond Toyota 2000 valued at up to £80.

Other notable lots in the auction include a 1937 Hornby 'O' gauge locomotive of No 4 Schools Class Eton, which is valued at up to £500, a collection of NME magazines from the 1960s worth around £200, a 1950s Disney Mickey and Minnie barrel organ set with working chimes worth about £120, and a 1964 cream and orange Beatles toy guitar by Selco worth up to £120.
