Marden Medical Practice, in Sutton Road, has been given the highest grade by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) after an inspection carried out in October last year.

Inspectors found that the practice was providing an "innovative, caring, effective, responsive and well-led service" meeting the needs of people it serves.

The report came after an inspection under new regulations from the CQC, grading each practice on whether they are safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led.

It found that the Shrewsbury practice had a range of outstanding areas, including the employment of a community and care co-ordinator to help patients by "co-ordinating support and signposting or referring to other services".

It also praised the use of tele-dermatology – sending pictures of patients' skin conditions to hospital-based specialists to speed up and improve diagnosis and treatment.

The practice was one of five surgeries across the country among the 72 inspected to be rated outstanding.

It also has a programme of education and training for all staff using "expert, external speakers" and the report praised the personality testing of new doctors recruited to the practice.

There are three male and five female doctors at the practice as well as three nurses, two health care assistants and a team of receptionists and administrators.
