Burglars attacked man, 62, with crowbar in Shropshire raid terror

A man was hit with a crowbar, punched and dragged across the floor by three robbers in his own home – moments after he had sat down to watch television.

Masked raiders smashed a window and set upon the 62-year-old man, leaving him with cuts to his head and back injuries which required hospital treatment.

They then ransacked the house before making off with tens of thousands of pounds and the victim's Mercedes, which was parked on the driveway.

The man's son, who asked not to be named, said the family had been left in shock following the raid on the house in Sutton Maddock, near Telford, shortly after 9pm on Monday.

He said the family had CCTV footage showing the moment the three balaclava-clad men ran up to the house and used a crow bar to smash the window to gain entry.

The victim was treated at the Princess Royal Hospital following the attack and was yesterday recovering at home with his family by his side.

His son said: "I received a phone call and came straight here. The house was ransacked by three lads – this is a 62-year-old bloke, it is horrifying.

"He was sitting watching television and they broke a window with a crow bar – which we have got on CCTV – and then got into the house.

"He took a crow bar to the head, a lad punched him and they tried to drag him around, it was not very nice at all."

He added: "My dad is walking wounded at the moment, he is still very shaken up. He has got cuts to the head and a really bad back – he cannot walk that well.

"I hope they are happy with themselves, hopefully they get found.

"We are all as a family trying to pull together and do whatever we can to help."

Police said the red Mercedes had been recovered a mile-and-a-half away at Stebbings in Sutton Hill, Telford.

Officers are appealing for people in both areas, especially the Sutton Hill area, to come forward if they saw anything suspicious on Monday night.

Detective Constable Will Quan, of Shrewsbury CID, said: "This was a frightening and horrific ordeal for someone to go through and something that no homeowner should ever have to experience.

"I am appealing to anyone who may have any information which will help us in capturing these offenders.

"All calls will be treated in strict confidence."

A worker at the Shell garage in the village, who did not wish to be named, said there had been a lot of police activity in the area on the night, but she had not realised there had been a robbery.

Anyone with any information about the raid or who may have seen the vehicle being abandoned should call West Mercia Police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111, quoting incident number 640s of April 27.
