Shropshire Star readers' voting intentions poll mirrors rest of UK

It is a highly unscientific poll, but it appears Shropshire and Mid Wales voters are as confused by the General Election as the rest of the nation.

The survey will encourage Labour supporters fighting to keep hold of Telford, while Tories in control of rural Shropshire will take comfort from consistency in polls that have shown Ed Miliband failing to pull away from David Cameron in the fight for Number 10.

One surprise is the falling away of the Lib Dems, who are hoping to win back Montgomeryshire. The party expects to do well in target seats like the one vacated by Lembit Opik five years ago, but continues to struggle in polls.

Meanwhile Ukip remains the unknown quantity, polling almost 20 per cent on shropshirestar.com. Amid high profile campaigning, it is still unclear how the Ukip vote will affect the main parties in Shropshire and Mid Wales.

It comes as the main party leaders embark on a frenzied final round of campaigning, criss-crossing the country as they target marginal seats.

Mr Cameron insisted there was "momentum" behind his party's campaign, saying: "I will always put the country first."

Mr Miliband campaigned on the NHS, telling supporters: "Right now, our NHS is in grave danger because David Cameron has broken his promises on the NHS."
