The leather football, which sold for £1,350, was used during England's 1-0 win over Scotland in 1959. Ironbridge-born Wright owned the ball until his death in September 1994 at the age of 70.

Then his wife Joy, one of the Beverley Sisters, gave it away to an unnamed footballer who had won a trial with Arsenal.

The ball was expected to sell for between £1,500 and £2,000 during the sale at London's Graham Budd Auctions yesterday afternoon. Also during the auction, a rare Wolves shirt worn during the 1921 FA Cup Final was sold for £6,700.

The gold and black striped shirt was worn by Wolves outside right Thomas "Tancy" Lea in the FA Cup final against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge on April 23, 1921, which the north London side won 1-0.

In total Billy Wright made 105 appearances for England, captaining his country a record 90 times.

He played 490 times for Wolves from 1939 to 1959, winning the First Division title three times under his leadership, in 1954, 58 and 59.
