Future of Bridgnorth post office thrown into doubt
The future of a post office could be in doubt once the postmaster retires – because no-one wants to take it on.
The owner of Low Town Post Office wants to sell the business or transfer it to a new premises but so far no interest has been shown in maintaining the service.
Post Office Ltd has said no final decision has been made about the future of the Low Town branch but it was committed to maintaining the service in the area.
A decision is expected to be made by the end of June.
Low Town Post Office was threatened with closure six years ago but was kept open following a campaign. Bridgnorth MP Philip Dunne has again been drafted in to try and save the service.
"The postmaster of the Low Town post office is now looking to retire and has been endeavouring to sell the post office or transfer it to another retail business nearby. I am due to meet him soon to discuss his situation and to see whether I can help to ensure that Low Town retains a post office to serve its many residents."
Christian Lea, Shropshire Councillor for Bridgnorth, said it would be a real loss to Low Town if the post office closed.
He said: "Many people use it whilst doing their shopping and it will be a real inconvenience for some, particularly the elderly if they are faced with having to use the High Street Post Office. I hope that someone can be found to take it on"
Town clerk Anne Wilson said Bridgnorth Town Councilhad not been aware the post office might have to close.
She said: "If there is any way the council could support the Post Office to stay open they would be happy to do so. It is a vital service for the residents of Low Town."
