Now her owners hope the owner of the other dog will have an attack of conscience and come forward before another animal – or a person – is injured.

Tara, a lurcher cross, was enjoying a walk with her Tony Sizer on farmland in Bicton Heath last Tuesday night. When he saw another dog approach, Mr Sizer, from Bicton Heath, clipped Tara's lead back on keep her out of harm's way.

However, the other dog attacked her causing severe injuries to her chest and tears to her shoulder and foreleg.

She was rushed to a nearby vets' surgery and treated for deep puncture wounds and shock.

Tony's wife, Hilary, said: "What if it had been a child or another dog? Has this happened before and will it happen again? We are very concerned dog owners.

"My husband doesn't remember much about the attack just that he was trying to get Tara out of the way. He put himself between her and the other dog. She was still on her lead and was pretty much stuck. My husband was on the ground trying to protect her.

"The other dog had at least three goes at her. By the time my husband managed to get her away to safety she was pouring with blood.

"My husband came home, covered in blood, Tara leaving a trail of blood in her wake then we managed to get her to Vets4Pets quickly.

"She left a pool of blood in the car and another trail across the car park and across the floor at the vets. They were very concerned at the ferocity of the fight, the attacker was very serious, it appears.

"One fang had punctured her chest and she had tears and bites all over. Once she came home from the vets, after they had done what they could for her, she was very subdued. She has barely eaten a thing and is obviously very sore."

Mrs Sizer added that the dog, which was a large grey shaggy type, was accompanied by a smaller "shiny" dog, and a man.

"We are just worried for children and other dogs. Tara is a rescue dog and this has knocked her," she added.

Anyone who knows anything about the attack should contact Mrs Sizer on (01743) 247363.
