Motorcyclist killed in A49 Shropshire crash is named

A 27-year-old motorcyclist who died after a crash on the A49 in Shropshire has been named by police.

Merrick Burns, 27, who lived in the Shrewsbury area, died hours after the collision with a green Toyota and a white Citroen at the junction for Grinshill at 5.45pm on Monday.

Mr Burns was "the best friend to everybody", his family said. Mr Burns, who was known as Mez, suffered severe head injuries in the collision with a green Toyota and a white Citroen at the junction for Grinshill at 5.45pm on Monday.

Motorists tried to resuscitate him at the scene and he was airlifted to North Staffordshire Hospital, but died hours later.

In a statement, Mr Burns' family said: "Merrick was always loved and will never be forgotten. He was the best friend to everybody and loved by all. Merrick was strong and brave – he played rugby for Market Drayton Rugby Club. He also loved to water ski and was the best at slalom skiing.

"He loved to travel and spent a year in Australia living the dream."

Mr Burns was from Market Drayton but moved to Shrewsbury and attended Thomas Adams School in Wem.

He was the son of Gary and Charlotte, big brother to Callum, Gabriella and Fraser, grandson of John and Enid Green and the boyfriend of Rache Amber. The family has asked for its privacy to be respected.

Constable Mark Booth, of West Mercia Police, said: "Our thoughts are with Merrick's family. We are urging anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who may have seen any of the vehicles beforehand to come forward." Call police on 101 quoting incident number 608 of June 8.
